Texas is known with the words big, large, oversize and open. The Lone Star State is widely known for big areas, large amounts of food, oversize trucks, and open ranges.

It is also known for its many ranches – in fact, much of the state, including the region between San Antonio and Austin called the hill country, was originally settled by ranchers.

The first ranchers raised cattle, sheep and a variety of other farm animals. Others were farmers as well as ranchers, cultivating fields of grain and grasses to feed their ranch animals and themselves. Ranching is big business in Texas, but it doesn’t necessarily require huge plots of land or livestock.

Texas hill country isn’t the dry, flat land you might have seen in Westerns. There is no shortage of year-round water. This area is dotted with lakes, rivers and streams. Ground water is readily available as well. There are trees and other types of greenery in the hill country.

The rolling hill country of Texas is perfect for ranches of all sizes. Of course, traditional livestock and horse ranches are also an important part of the local economy, but there are many other types of ranches that can be successful in this excellent area. As wildlife is quite abundant, sport hunting ranches are one option to consider.

Fishing has always been a popular recreational activity in the Texas hill country’s many lakes and streams, many people may not realize that raising fish can be a livelihood as well. There are lots of big catfish ranches in the area thanks to the plentiful water. Recreational sports ranches are also gaining in popularity, with water sports, all-terrain vehicle and off-road vehicle areas available.

With the many different types of properties available, ranching in Texas isn’t just for cattlemen or sheepherders anymore. Many people in the Hill Country area have “mini ranches” that are more for their own recreational enjoyment than for profit. Even just a handful of acres could include a barn, grassland and fields for grazing animals, forested areas, and even water for fishing or other water sports.

As a result, the Texas hill country is a great place to live on a ranch. With many reasonably priced parcels of land available – ranging in size from a few acres to hundreds of acres.

Texas has found its place on the map as a hot spot for legal action, particularly for patent infringement lawsuits. Texas lawyers are very busy, and with good reason. Texas lawyers are moving the patent infringement lawsuits in Texas along faster than any other state. Patent infringement in Texas is not necessarily that high, but the number of cases in Texas comes in well over the national average.

Only the central District of California will handle more lawsuits than Texas, and this is big news for small towns in Texas. Texas lawyers have been able to expedite cases, and thus Texas is making its mark on the map with major corporations as the place to be for a lawsuit.

Resolving cases of patent infringement in Texas means less down time for the companies involved, and means big business for small towns of the Lone Star State. Hotels, restaurants, and other small businesses are benefiting well from the onslaught of lawsuits involving patent infringement in Texas.

Texas lawyers are handling the bulk of the cases, typically representing the claimants, while patent lawyers from New York, California, Colorado, Maine, Florida, and Oregon have all gotten a reasonably well paid tour of the state of Texas.

The Texas courts have seen the parade of Texas lawyers as well as their national counterparts and maintain the expectation for more in the future. With the national increase in lawsuits it is completely believable that this year Texas lawyers will top their current record of 234 cases in the Eastern District alone.

With patent infringement in Texas becoming such big business for small town America, you would think the big cities were missing out. Not at all. The large cities such as Houston are certainly holding their own in the count of cases coming through Texas. So why is there such a heavy interest in bringing it to Texas?

Texas has a much higher claimant award average than anywhere else in the country. While several sources quote various numbers, the conservative figure is 78% of cases are judged in favor of the patent holders which is quite a difference from the national average of 59%. Investigations into this high number has come up with generalized reasoning.

The Texas juries which were polled stated that they made their decisions based on the letter of the law, not a “loose interpretation of the law” as some state they were asked to do by the defense lawyers. Others state that the cases are just so obvious, that it was very clear that the patent violators knew or should have known that the patent was already in existence.

Cases regarding patent infringement in Texas are expected to grow, and Texas lawyers are prepared for the job. Just as the cases in Texas are agreeably sized as everything else in Texas, so are the verdicts. Cases involving it in Texas are subject to judgment awards as large as everything else in Texas. Some Texas lawyers state that this is due to the understanding of the potential financial devastation that stealing from another company can bring. Texans seriously look down upon stealing, which is what most patent infringement equates to.

Obviously, Texas lawyers are quite skilled at what they do, and when it comes to protecting patent rights, skill of the lawyer means everything. Patent infringement in Texas means results for claimants. Texas lawyers are serious about the results they bring in for their claimants. Thus, it would make sense that if you’re in need of a patent infringement lawyer and are in need of results, Texas would be the place to look.

After such a high peak in Texas patent infringement cases, it would be reasonable to believe that the peak is over, and that there will soon be too many Texas lawyers, But the truth seems to be revealing itself a bit differently, as patent infringement in Texas is still only second to the central district of California. What does this mean for the future of patent infringement in the United States? Only time will tell. But as of right now, if you’re in need of a lawyer, the place to be is, or course, Texas.

Still cherishing the memory that it was from 1836 to 1845 an independent nation in its own right, TEXAS stands apart from the rest of the United States. While its sheer size – eight hundred miles from east to west and nearly a thousand from top to bottom – gives it a great geographical diversity, is firmly bound together by a shared history, culture and ideology. Independence is key to the Texan mentality, from the overriding distrust of government – any government – to the absence of unionized labor. As the old anti-litter campaign put it, “Don’t mess with Texas.”

Preconceived ideas about what exactly is “Texan” are soon shattered. It’s actually one of the most eclectic and cosmopolitan states in the Union and each of the major tourist destinations has its own distinct character. Hispanic San Antonio , for example, with its Mexican population and historic importance, has a laid-back feel absent from the big-city neurosis of Houston or Dallas , while trendy Austin revels in a lively music scene and intellectualism found nowhere else in the state.

Regional differences are vast. The swampy, forested east is more like Louisiana than the pretty Hill Country or the agricultural plains of the Panhandle , and the tropical Gulf Coast has little in common with the mountainous deserts of the west. Changes in climate are equally dramatic: snow is common on the Panhandle, whereas the humidity of Houston, in particular, is only made bearable by nonstop high-power air conditioning.

The second of two research ships bound for a huge “island” of plastic debris in the Pacific Ocean leaves San Francisco today.

Ocean currents have pushed the refuse together in an area estimated to be larger than the State of Texas.

The expedition, named Project Kaisei, will study the impact of the waste on marine life.

Ultimately the organisers hope to clear the plastic and recycle it for use as fuel and new products.

Speaking from the quayside in San Francisco, waiting for the second ship to leave, Ryan Yerkey, the project’s chief of operations, told BBC News: “Every piece of trash that is left on a beach or ends up in our rivers or estuaries and washes out to the sea is an addition to the problem, so we need people to be the solution.”

“Twenty years from now we can’t be harvesting the ocean for trash. We need to get it out but we need to also have people make those changes in their lives to stop the problem from growing and hopefully reverse the course.”

Five-day journey

The two ships, Kaisei – which left today – and New Horizon from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography – which left on 2 August – will take five days to reach the debris.

They will return at the end of the month.

The vortex of currents which pushes the debris together is known as the North Pacific Gyre.

Ryan Yerkey has sailed across the Pacific twice and has watched the problem build up since the 1980s. He blames our increased use of disposable products.

The Texas Society of Sculptors exhibit debuts this spring with an installment of 38 pieces. The sculptures will be on display Tuesday, March 3 through end of May. Winners of a juried competition will be announced Sunday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m. as part of a public reception with the artists from 1 to 4 p.m. that day. Sculpting demonstrations in various media will occur April 18 and May 16, from 1 to 4 p.m. on both Saturdays. The exhibit will be displayed at the Gardens of the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave, Austin, TX, 78739. Reception and sculpture demonstrations will be in the center’s courtyard.

The Wildflower Center features a wide-ranging exhibit of sculptures nestled throughout the center’s grounds. Eighteen Texas artists crafted the works depicting humans, birds, lizards and other subjects from stone, wood, resin, steel and other materials. Among them are serene, stone abstracts of human faces by Michael Epps, whimsical, colorful elfin-like figurines by Dar Richardson, and detailed bronze statues. The latter are among the offerings from Gregory Beck, who is influenced by classical realism in his creation of lifelike works that include larger-than-life human figurines.
The public is invited to meet several participating artists at the reception on Sunday afternoon, March 15, and to learn about sculpting with various materials at the April and May demonstrations.
Admission: $7 adults, $6 seniors and students, $3 children and free for members and children under 5. For more information, call 512.232.0100

Governor Rick Perry, Attorney General Greg Abbot and Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples announced today that the state is taking legal action in the U.S Court of Appeals challenging the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) decision to regulate green house gases.

“This legal action is being taken to protect Texas economy and the jobs that go with it, as well as defend Texas’ freedom to continue our successful environmental strategies free from federal overreach”, said Perry.

Since 2007, when the Supreme Court in Massachusetts v. EPA concluded that greenhouse gases are air pollutants covered by the Clean Air Act the debate over policy approaches to addressing climate change has intensified, so also questions as to whether the health and environmental benefits of air pollution control justify the costs incurred by industry, taxpayers, and consumers.

“With billions of dollars at stake, EPA outsources the scientific basis for its greenhouse gas regulation to a scandal-plagued international organization that cannot be considered objective or trustworthy”, said Attorney General Greg Abbot, “so EPA should not rely upon it to reach a decision that will hurt small businesses, farmers and ranchers, and the larger Texas economy”.

The state has filed a Petition for review with the U.S Court of Appeals for the D.C Circuit, and will also file a Petition for Reconsideration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking administrator Lisa P. Jackson to reconsider her decision. Texas holds that EPA’s Endangerment Finding is legally unsupported because the agency outsourced scientific assessment to the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Dr. Phil Jones, a scientist at the center of the Climategate scandal has acknowledged problems with climate change science.
